Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing

By Pastor Newton Fairweather.

What is your main thing?

Recently, in the quiet of the morning breeze, before the sun had broken through the sky or the ducks had awakened by the lake, it was one of the most beautiful days I had experienced. There were many reasons it was so beautiful. The wind was just right, the noise was perfect as I walked around my favorite park. It was so quiet I could hear the noise of my sneakers as I jogged through the grass. In that space, I began to look at heaven and the sky and marvel at how it was so beautiful and wonderfully made and placed in a perfect position. This arrangement is no accident.

Everyone is given the same amount of time each day. No one gets an extra hour or minute. What we do with the time we are given is up to us. We can abuse it. As I get older, I have learned to appreciate the seconds, minutes, and hours of each day. Tomorrow is not a promise.

When I ask the question—What is your main thing?—your answers will often tell me what is important to you. There is no manual to living life. The closest you will come to a guide is the “BIBLE.” Over the many years of my life, I have tried and tested its words over and over again. The shoulders that I stand on as a human being. The words that my family used to tell me from the Bible have proven to be on the money time after time. It never seems to be outdated or have an expiration date.

In the age of “AI,” social media, the various influencers, etc., of all the sources that we look to get our information from, there is none like the “Bible.” There is nothing new under the sun. It just has been re-branded, re-tread, and re-colored, but it is not new. We will only do what we know. Most of us are searching for answers in all the wrong places. Our phones come with a built-in “AI.”  All are designed to get you to go the easy route. All designs to influence what you will think. The Bible urges us to think. It gives us direction on family, marriages, relationships, how to treat each other, etc. I can go on forever just talking about all the directions it gives on how to live life to its fullest.

A dilemma of the human spirit is as follows:

Visualize this allegory in your mind. It perfectly illustrates the era we inhabit:

There are two Spirit dogs in each of us. One is of the Spirit and one is of the Flesh. Which one is the strongest? Answer, the one that you feed the most. The flesh dog is often what you will hear in the eco-chamber on a daily basic. The spirit dog is the one that feeds your thoughts by the Bible, your prayer life, your relationship with God in your daily walk.

To live your best life in 2025, cultivate a daily connection with the teachings found in the Bible.
